Description
Robert Ervin Howard (January 22, 1906 – June 11, 1936)
This Monday marked another anniversary of Conan's creator and I thought I'd pay a small tribute to his influential writing with this piece featuring the aforementioned barbarian.
For someone like me, who grew up fascinated by tales of science fiction and Fantasy, the Sword&Sorcery genre that Howard created was quite fascinating. I never had the typical male fantasy of being able to crush my enemies and so forth; but as a young aspiring artist, the imagery that was coveyed in his words was very inspiring and more than once I found myself exploring the famous Hyborean Age following the footsteps of the Cimmerian in his wanderings.
Of course, while most folks might know Conan as interpreted by Mr. Schwarzennegger, my first introduction to him visually were Frank Frazetta's illustrations. Thus, in my artwork, I always tend to lean towards that kind of depiction. A more rugged, sun-tanned, haggard outsider trying to find his way in that decadent civilisation lost in time.
I hope I've made some justice to such an amazingly iconic character!
