NIGHTFELL - Berunmen

Description

Happy Monday, folks!

Another hectic week's starting and as I've promised, here's your regularly scheduled "Nightfell" update.

This time around, I wanted to focus a bit on what the "villains" of this story look like; I mean, besides the giant bugs that roam the desert and are the bread and butter (sometimes quite literally) of the human population of Ert. These angry fellows here are called Berunmen and it is they who have called the world that and claim to be its original settlers. Despite what legends abound of creation amongst the living and the dead in mankind's cities, the chosen of the Dark Gods, the shadow-shaping Kisamonen, claim that men are but usurpers of what is rightfully theirs. And they'll fight to the death each nightfell with that single purpose.
These creatures dwell below the surface in the endless tunnels they've burrowed hiding from the God-Sight that hurts their sensitive skin and blinds their eyes. Built to thrive in darkness, the Berunmen rely more on tact, smell and sound rather than vision though their night accustomed eyes can see much better than humans' in pitch black. They also have all the qualities of the creatures of the deep: light, almost transparent skin and a faint bioluminiscence that helps them navigate the ninety years of underground existence they've been burdened with until the next night cycle in which they're free to roam their purported domains once again.

As you might be able to tell, I've had HUGE fun developing these guys and their culture along with Nightfell's writer. Being able to look at real-life deep sea creatures for inspiration as well as other sources helped me understand better some aspects of biology that were completely unknown to me and I think will give more realism to the whole.
The limited palette I colored these guys with is prety outside of my range and I wanted to convey that sense of sun-hidden skin that you get from creatures living underground for lon periods of time. They also are much more savage, which I wanted to reflect by making their weapons crude clubs made of insects' body parts. And lastly, I also kept a lot of variation between them which may not be visible from this illustration alone. There are a LOT of sub-species within the main branch and I'll shed some light on them as the weeks go by. Or dark, as they like it :D

As usual, let me know what you think and thank you for supporting this endeavor.

Nic.-
