Happy Tuesday, folks!
Yesterday was quite a day what with the outpour of love over my Warhammer artwork, which I thank you for deeply
I will soon have more pieces in that vein to show you all as I work through the incredible pile of delayed commissions I have. But for now, I go back to my warm-ups, which will have to do and hope you love 'em nonetheless.
Last Sunday would've been Jack 'The King' Kirby's 99th birthday and in his honor, many artists drew a special image based upon his reknowned characters/designs; which isn't as easy as it sounds: the man practically designed modern comics so you have such a wide range of options it can be somewhat staggering. For me though, being in a sudden Superman kick, the choice had no contest: I wanted to tackle the ruler of Apokolips himself, Darkseid.
It's not everyday that someone comes along and creates a new enemy for such a well-established and iconic character as the Man of Steel, but if anyone was to do it, that would've been Jack. And not only did he create it, he made it so amazingly well, that it quickly became of of the most dangerous threats to Superman he ever faced and to the whole of the DC Universe.
Doing Kirby justice is not something to take lightly and I didn't even try. What I did try to do was to pour all of the love I have for his artwork into this tribute, trying to remind myself of what he used to say to young aspiring artists: it's not how great you are at drawing anatomy or perspective, or how amazingly well you do hands. It's about being the right man for the job and about making your best effort to polish what you know you have. He said that none of us would probably be Leonardo DaVinci, but DaVinci wouldn't have been the right man drawing Dick Tracy. He said, "The tools are a dead object, it's in the person." and that's about as right as one guy can be, at least in my mind. Enjoy what you do and put all your effort into it; that's Jack Kirby's motto and one I try to live by as well.
So, I hope you all enjoy this tribute and see you tomorrow with more of that 'Superman' kick I mentioned
