Happy Monday, folks!
Well, that was a long gap between updates here in the gallery; work, as usual, has kept me overly busy these past days. That said, reading "The Lord of the Rings" has not stopped which leads, in turn, to artwork that we can all appreciate (I hope!).
In following my plan to illustrate every chapter in the book, now it's the second's turn: The Shadow of the Past, in which Gandalf tells Frodo a bit of the history behind the magic ring that Bilbo'd left him along with Bag End. Which I always loved, of course. Reading Tolkien narrate the lore of his mythology through his characters was always one of the most amazing parts of the book. And of course, we get reacquainted here with a creature that'll have huge significance later on: Gollum.
As I have studied, Tolkien hadn't conceived of a direct sequel to The Hobbit when the time came to write something else within his Middle Earth. He did have much of the Silmarillion's lore, but when his editor told him readers wanted more hobbits he set out to find something that would connect that work with the whole. Thus, what had been an otherwise dangerous but passing adventure on Bilbo's journey, became the thread that tied it all together. The innocent magic ring found in Gollum's cave, as it turned out, was none other than the One Ring.
In this image, as in the previous one, I tried to convey as much emotion as possible. I feel like LotR manages to conjure up a lot of feelings in the readers and that's what makes it so thrilling and passionate. Thus, I made Gollum's cave and the whole atmosphere of his surroundings take precedence over himself, enhancing his loneliness and how small he must feel in the belly of the Misty Mountains with only the Ring to keep him company.
