Description

Happy Monday, folks!

During the weekend, as I tried to warm-up before diving into pages and other projects I discovered something I think might finally make me take valour enough to illustrate one of my favorite authors (if not THE most favorite): J.R.R Tolkien.

For a very long time, I've admired and cherished Tolkien's writing and philosophy regarding Fantasy and I have even been a part of my country's Tolkien Society and given lectures on many subjects from his works. Yet, I never had courage to illustrate his myths; of course, I've dabbled into the characters and settings here and there, but I never ended up with a product I deemed worthy of such a long lasting piece of literature. And to top it all off, some of my favorite illustrators had also tackled the subject with a prowess I never felt on par with mine.
That said and as I plunge into my yearly reading of the book, I remembered that the great Jean 'Moebius' Giraud, in a list of how to approach the work as an artist mentioned that the first thing you had to do was blank your mind completely to what you were doing. You shouldn't feel anything: no attachments, no desire, no nothing. Just do the work. Which is what hit me: I had always tried to hard to elevate my work to the level of Tolkien's or the great illustrators that have come before that I forgot my own voice and skills.
Thus, I approached this piece as I would do any other job. I read the material, chose what I thought would best represent the Chapter I wanted to illustrate and got on with it. The result, I'm happy to say, is not a complete waste :D

Whether this is any good or not is up to the viewer as usual, but I'm glad I could overcome a big hurdle out of my comfort zone and jump into drawing my favorite book. If all goes well, my idea would be to slowly render at least one Chpater at a time until I'm done with the book. I may or may not have time to do more, but like I said, I'm approaching this as if it were an assignment and for now, the cleint only asked for one per chapter :D Of course, since I'm indulging, I chose black and white as the medium too.

As usual, let me know what you think and sound off in the comments :)

See you tomorrow with the daily update and hope you have a great week!
