ULTRA by NicolasRGiacondino ULTRA by NicolasRGiacondino
Happy Monday, my fellow watchers and watcherettes!

Today is a joyous day of achievement and, at the same time, somewhat bittersweet too.

For four years, beginning on April 22, 2008, I've been researching and illustrating the mighty Primarchs, the genetically engineered champions and leaders of mankind's legions of Space Marines and The Emperor himself. I've explored their strengths and weaknesses and depicted their homeworlds and cultures, weapons and physical traits. Today, it ends.

Both the client and I always thought it would be fitting to have the Primarch of the XIII Legion be the one to end the series. Why? Because it is him who shaped much of what the Imperium would become in the fabled 41st Millenium. It is his contribution and penning of the Codex Astartes that would give the Space Marines purpose again. The strategist, the warrior, the leader: Roboute Guilliman of the Ultramarines.
There is in this image a deceivingly simple nature to his armour. I could've added a lot of bling and embellishment to it, but I preferred to focus on his stern features and his looking ahead into the future. I preferred to convey triumph and honor, rather than decorations for decorations' sake. It is thus, that with simple and straightforward details, this Primarch wears honors that I only illustrated on The Emperor himself: the halo, the double-headed eagle, the sword resembling the blade of the God-Emperor as well as the laurels. Everything makes us think of this man as a complete hero and saviour, creating the full circle back to mankind's first true saviour and guide.

It's been wonderful to hear all that you had to say about this project. You've seen me grow within these images and helped me carry on this titanic task. You have even graced me with your statements about preferring my vision to the official.

Thank you for your support and here's the living proof that no matter how long it takes me, I always deliver :D

See you soon!

Nic.-

My farourite Primarch, done full justice by both Mr Dan Abnett and yourself Master Aerion (although I see that somewhat-tragically The Black Library has yet to retain your services; more fool them).

Sad to see the series come to a close, one of my greatest art joys has been watching your creativity in their interpretations. Beautiful work, I can't wait to see what is next in the future.

Congratulations, sir. You have turned someone whom half the fandom hates into a demigod we would all be happy to follow. Much the same for ALL your other primarchs: the spirit of their writing combined with excellent design interpretation adds up to the best representation we can find of these legendary super-men.

Roboute Guilliman, Primarch of Ultramarines and Lord Commander of the Imperium. It is because of him, the Imperium still survives.

I found it hard to find any pictures of guilliman, but you've captured the pride of the ultramarines in this picture.

Another challenge would be battles or characters from the badab war.

This is probably my favorite piece of all the primarchs. As a smurf at my core it does my heart good to see him rendered out so nobly. There's precious little artwork of Guilliman, I'd hazard to say less so than most of the other primarchs.

For chapter and Emperor! Honor the Primarch! Glory to the 5th!

The Pompous Ass, The Arrogant Cur, The Deluded Ignorant.
Great work and congratulations on finishing the series, but I hate Guiliman and his Ultrasmurfs.

It looks excellent! I've got little else to say really. :D

It's sad that so many dislike the Ultramarines, but I understand that's the kinds of feelings that arise when GW promote the Ultras as their "main" marines, posterboys. They've also said some truly moronic things (WARD!!!) regarding other Chapter wishing they were Ultras (ppfff, maybe some younger Chapters, but certainly not those of ancient pedigree.)

On the other hand, I find it a bit fitting, sorta. That the man who pulled the Imperium together and reformed it, much to the anger of his peers, is now seen by many with a certain disdain - seen as a lesser scion of greater sires, if you will. :P Personally, I prefer to see him as a unscrupulous statesman and strategist, who was willing to do whatever it took, and tried his best to hide that behind the mask of orthodoxy. But to each his own.

while I have a strong dislike for Roboute and his chapter, your artistic style is a glorious one. A good way to end the project but certainly not the happiest image. Everything that has a beginning has and end, though. I daresay I haven't seen yet but did this encompass all 18 of the original primarchs?
