Pugni Imperium by NicolasRGiacondino Pugni Imperium by NicolasRGiacondino
This is an illustration i did of one of the Emperor of mankind's Primarchs, from the universe of Warhammer 40,000. I worked mostly from the details of his description in the Rulebooks and codex i consulted, trying not to be tied to another artist's vision. In the end i was really happy with this piece, and it was a great success amongst the fans of the game.

What do you all think?

Until soon.

Aerion the Faithful

I'm thinking a big part of my trouble is I work too small.  ;p
What size is this original?

It's not as big as you'd think. It has been away from my hands for a very long time, but i seem to recall it was somewhere around 10"x7", which is my usual standard.

Hi there,
I can't seem to find anyway to contact you directly so this will have to do. I like to commission an A4 piece of your artwork if you're up for it. Message me if you're willing to do the commission and we'll discuss the details.
Regards,

Keano87

would you ever consider doing something like this of Cable? He's always been a very "busy" visual character to look at in most illustrations....ie. Guns, armour etc. and has always been best drawn with a really square features.......your style would be amazing with that character!

Is it wrong to say that this guy, as badass as he is, looks a bit like an ass-whooping version Freddie Mercury? That'd make him even MORE of a great guy.

I love the style, the colours and the energy that I'm getting from it.

Excellent stuff!

Wonderful. The yellow is very, very nice and crisp; and I love how it contrasts with the many smaller black details.

Detail is great. Design is great. Background is great.
If I were to 'complain' (and I'm really not) about anything, it would be that his face looks a wee bit more 'cartoony' than the overall pic. This however is probarbly just your own style, and this very minor matter of taste does nothing to mar my opinion of this excellent piece of art.

Sorry, I'll have to fave this now. Hope I can be forgiven.

It's still interesting for me to receive compliments on what I deem are 'old' works (and certainly some that I really feel should be banished into oblivion!), but this one is still held in esteem by my picky self.
The face is indeed a bit cartoony and that's because I hadn't actually worked on my style so much as to develop faces and countenances the way I do now; not realistic, but more rounded and worked. Here is the remastered version of Rogal Dorn in case you haven't seen it: [link]

And you're forgiven indeed, mate ;)...

I'm glad! And the fact that it is an 'old' piece according to my standards makes it even more pleaseant to hear it still holds up to the standard of the rest.

Very nice I like it, little less dark compared to most of the imagery you see for 40k but that alone is some what of a merit.

Thank you, Kieran! I know what you mean about the 'dark' element, though I do not think my style is less dark, but rather less busy than the official artwork and that's why it took everyone by surprise, being at the same time veru different but very fitting for the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

No worries, by dark I think my mind was a bit obscured by a lot of the inquisitor style imagery I have been looking at recently, but often astartes is also very shaded backgrounds this is still good (as it brings the focus onto the main figure) but sometimes I feel there is too much of the same style. This is much more original and for lack of words awesome :D

I like your rendition of Dorn. It's a nice change of pace from the clean-shaven, all-too-much like Roboute Guilliman-looking image I see everywhere else.

Thank you very much, James! If there's one thing i always wanted to bring to the Dark Millenium, it was originality, certainly. I like to stick as much as I can to the official fluff, but also adding small details to make the characters my own, without altering their essence, but rather enhancing it. Thus, it's always a pleasure to know I've succeded.

It is always bad to be limitated by someone's imagination. It's a lot of fun when you can add something from yourself in each piece. And of course this one is fantastic. So powerful!

Well, there's certainly various interpretations of the fluff, and quite a lot of stories on such a character as Dorn. I guess it's possible that he carried a hammer; I've also read he was blonde. This is just my interpretation, mind you and should be watched as such, heh, heh...

Thanks for commenting!

Well, actually, that was kind of the whole point; it was just that, at some point I got really swamped with work and so I had to turn my eyes away from illustrating the Emperor's Finest. I may return (and plan to) one day to them!
