PUGNI MAGNO IMPERIALIS by NicolasRGiacondino PUGNI MAGNO IMPERIALIS by NicolasRGiacondino
Aaaand...

Here he is; my latest Primacrh in the series. Another take on an old design I'd done (and certainly THE most acclaimed by the Dark Millenium fans here on dA and elsewhere!) and one I was very intent on seeing if I could improve. And, to an extent, I think I have... so, here is. The Fist of the Imperium; the prodigal Son: Rogal Dorn
My first deviation and here again... [link]
There was a detail that had bothered me ever since the Horus Heresy books came out and everyone pointed out: it's canon now that he has white hair, and my rendition had black hair, thus that was highly inconsistent.
Here you can see that detail mended, though I kept the moustache that made my rendition known and added that sturdy flavour and patronising aspect to this Primarch. As a matter of fact, you'll notice that he's the only one in this series so far that's looking down at us, which makes his image all the more big and protecting and inquisitive.

I hope you enjoy it as usual, and find it as appropriate and as praiseworthy as the previous one. Until soon!

Nic.-

Ps: I always was wondering why Rogal had been drawn with white hair.

As odd as this sounds, I always pictured Rogal with jet black hair--like your rendition.

Either way, I love both. Rogal being one of my Favorite Primarchs.

I really like what you've done with Dorn and Russ by giving them facial hair it looks so much better.

The facial hair is something I've been praised for ever since I came up with this design, so I'm glad to know the fans think I could make an improvement on such an iconic character. Thank you for the compliments!

Some Finnish guy liked your interpretation so much that he specifically included a moustached Rogal Dorn in his ongoing primarch model series. Look over here: [link]

Weird - for some reason, I guess the black hair part, I'd always imagined Rogal Dorn as being sort of a Samuel Jackson styled, dark-skinned no-nonsense guy. I like this version though, your version here looks much more of a Victorian British regimental colonel.

That's exactly where I wanted to go with this image, actually, so I'm glad I achieved it. The tricky part of rendering Primarchs is that there is a very definite image of them (most of the time and even more so now with the HH Books) and coupled with the people's imagination, you can go wrong on many levels.
However, I always try ans stay true to what the general consensus is regarding the characters and I'm glad I get a nice response from the community :)

Thanks for posting, mate!

Where to begin... I think I'll just start off with saying that this is wonderful, although that goes without saying.

Looking at both this and the other one, I'm having a hard time deciding which I like better. I believe that's a good thing.

One thing is for sure, this has a lot more details. And while you significantly changed the face/hair color, the features remain intanct. Kudos for that.

And since I don't really know what else to say, I'll stop here.

I'm glad you took some time to ponder these two side by side and that you definitely see the improvement I mentioned, mate. Especially on his face.

I personally like this one over the last one, but that's because I see much more evolution here as well as an overall step forward in technique and skills, lighting and colour than the other one. However, I do think the composition in the older was a good mark!

Thanks again and don't stop commenting!

No problem at all, it was my pleasure to study those two fine pieces and 'weigh' them against each other. And yes, the face was a significant improvement, more in line with the overall picture.

I can see why, but I think I might not agree with you. I think I have a slight preference for the older one, although that is very slight. This one has the upper hand in technicality, but the other one certainly has its charm. And, I'm a sucker for full background pieces ;).

You're welcome, and of course I'll keep commenting. I've scanned your gallery, and will make an effort to comment on as much of it as I can. Keep up the good work.

I used to play 40k a long time ago, I love all the space marine mythology but I was more of a Dark Angels fan, especially the Death Wing story from the original novel with Weasel Fierce and those guys vs. genestealers.

I actually liked him better with black hair... maybe that's a younger version of him. This is magnificent as well, of course, but his head and face isn't as striking as in the older picture.

To be honest, my friend... I did like the older version as well. The white hair never sounded too cool for me when I read HORUS RISING and the general consensus here seems to be that my prior image seemed younger or more lively. Something I agree upon.
We'll see if I can tackle Dorn again with this level of detail but keeping to my first thoughts on him having dark hair...

Thanks for the comment, as usual!

He certainly has an imperial air about him that befits a primarch. I must read the Horus Heresy books again, however, as I don't remember anything about Dorn having white hair...
