No Quarter by NicolasRGiacondino No Quarter by NicolasRGiacondino
It's certainly been a long time since I uploaded anything having to do with the Dark Millenium (and I know there are a lot of watchers out there who are fans of Warhammer 40,000 indeed!). One of the reasons is that I'm working a lot on many projects related to this universe, and so when I have some free time, I try to do something completely different.
However, today I'm bringing you the latest image I've conjured up for a client, involving one of my favourite Chapters of Space Marines in the service of the Imperium: Imperial Fists!
The request asked me to depict a scene of the Horus Heresy days, whilst the Imperial Fists defended the Palace of Terra against the mighty forces of Chaos, especially the Iron Warriors, whom laid siege to the holy place for a long time...
After some drafts, this image came up, which I'm most happy of; there's something in the composition that I like: a natural flow to it, that I think is good to the development of the whole action, without cluttering up the piece. The yellow is particularly tricky to handle, but it also came out quite balanced against the white marble of the columns and debris, and then there's the window, into which I worked some new tricks with reflections and such and I loved how it came out. Especially taking into account that the silhouettes are enough to delineate the landscape but without overwhelming the focus on the characters.
The characters themselves I also enjoyed very much, what with the old armour types, and the Sergeant resembling the IFs Primarch, Rogal Dorn, whom you know from this image: [link]

So, I hope you like it as well, and let me know what you think!

Nic.-

How come you don't draw any of the major Characters of Chaos? I honestly think they have more interesting stories.

I used to think this, used to play black legion but then realised I just liked them because I was going through my metalhead phase haha, figures i'd like the imperium more after I quit playing (more the guard than the marines)

still like some chaos, Alpha Legion spring to mind and Red Corsairs seem interesting

Mostly Iron Warriors and Emperor's Children.
I like Black Legion and Word Bearers too.

I really don't like the Alpha Legion.

while I used to play Black Legion I do now think abaddon fails a hell of a lot, if I still played they would be getting repainted, I do like iron warriors models and colour scheme

how come you don't like alpha legion? the whole "did they fall to chaos for the good of the galaxy" thing I find interesting

I don't like Alpha Legion because of that, and their color scheme. I really don't trust them.

I'm a die hard Chaos Space Marine fan.
I prefer there to be eternal war for Chaos as the conquer and rule the other races. That's just me.
Slaanesh and Tzeentch are my favored Gods.

I like Warhammer Fantasy a lot more than 40K, because 40K's fanbase is filled with man-children who complain about Pony-Space Marine cross overs.
Honestly. Grow up. They give a bad name for the rest of the 40K fandom.
Especially those fucking Role Play fagets who scream "FOR THE EMPEROR" or "HERETIC" as if their vocabulary was purposely limited.

It's sad, because I actually like cross overs.
It's rather tiresome to see the same things, over and over.

Excuse me for my rant, bro.

well pony crossovers are kinda weird but plenty of things are weirder so I wont judge haha

also I would say you don't have to trust something to like them, especially in fiction, currently watching/reading game of thrones series, love littlefinger, would I trust him? hell no but he's still interesting, also falling to chaos for reasons other than the standard lust for power is a good thing, makes them different, kinda started checking out night lords too, the guys hate both chaos and the imperium

I never got a chance to play Fantasy, shame that, the universe seems just as interesting as 40K though

everyone needs to rant from time to time so its cool :)

Oh, it's nothing, actually. I always like to use people's real names when I reply to their comments. It's a fair thing, I think, to check your profile and Gallery if you took the time to check mine; and in doing so, I like to also see if I can use your ame. I think it makes for a warmer reply than just a generic 'thank you'.

I'm sorry if I crossed the line or something!

Don't worry, there was no line crossing, I'm just surprised someone I didn't know IRL used my real name here. Not the first time though, but it doesn't happen often.

But your reasons good enough, and that'll do for me!

Did I miss something? In new 40k art it seems that space marines no longer have an Aquila on their chest. They have this steel harness thing. Even in Dawn of War II.

Well, some of them do, because it usually signifies that we're dealing with a different (older) kind of armour; the one that has the Aquilla on its chest is the Mk. VII, whilst the ones with the harness are Mk. V or IV.
In this particular image, I went for an older Mk. because it is a depiction of the Defence of Terra against Horus in the Emperor's Palace.

Well that would explain it.

My reaction is just that I only started seeing the harness around recently. I was afraid GW was trying to move away from the baroque style of 40k to something more traditionally Sci-Fi.

Thank you for the compliments, Sam! The armour looks different because this is supposed to be a Pre-Heresy scene, depicting the defense of the Palace of Terra; hence, all the armour is of older marks than the regular Mark VII we're used to seeing in the official artwork.

Well... I could probably name artistic reasons, taste reasons, dynamism reasons, but I'll just stick to the fact that they're so f**king BIG that they can actually fight without a helmet! They could rip your head off in the nude :D
