Kashmir by NicolasRGiacondino Kashmir by NicolasRGiacondino
Two updates close to each other? And Dark Millenium related...? You can't say I'm not spoiling you :D

This is an illustration requested by ~Turain, which I had a lot of fun rendering. Most of all because all of the elements involved in it are trademarks in my style: giant sand worms (resembling those of Herbert's greatest work, Thousand Sons, Pre-Heresy times and desertic landscapes... if you've watched my gallery for a while, you know those things appear every now and then.
There's lots of details that I enjoy about this piece; the egyptian theme of the Thousand Sons librarian, his vague resemblance in armour to his Primarch Magnus (one of my favourite Libris Primaris renditions), and the muted, weird palette amongst other bits. I think it's this last item that's made me most proud.
I usually am wary with colours, but this time I tried to use a combination like the old masters did. Like Frazetta, for example. And I didn't went over the top with them either. The subdued sky, the purple/yellowish/greenish hues of the worm, all conspite with the older armour on the Space Marine to tint this illustration with a bit of a retro-vibe. As if it was a pulp cover.

So, I hope you enjoy this one and hit that :+fav: button if you do!

See you all soon.

Nic.-

PS.. For some unknown reason to me, Led Zeppelin's Kashmir fits this image perfectly well. Listen to it, if you can, whilst viewing it and you'll know what I mean.
I think it's the desert references in the lyrics and that oriental atmosphere in the sounds... or maybe it's just my lack of sleep :P

The good thing about the Dark Millenium is that the galaxy is so wide and populated, that the Space Marines could even encounter a proper xenomorph one day :D

You mean the tyronids? They already have the terminators, and Sauron's reach is large if he can put orks in space.

Fabulous armour & AWESOME SANDWORM!! :D And that sky... it pulls the whole picture together. I like how you can use a variety of styles in one piece and get a coherent feel from it.

A truly magnificent piece. :)

Although, a very tiny bit of criticism: Shouldn't pre-Heresy Power Armour have the beaked helmets? I always thought that the grilled helmets only came along with Mark VI or Mark VII Power Armour which appeared well into the late end of the 35rd millennium.

Beaked Helmet is Mk6! And the grilled helmet (although with studs on the top of the helmet) first appeared in Mk5.

But, true enough, helmet should be either MK2, Mk3 or Mk4.

(Aaargh pressed "send" before finishing my sentence... It should have read: )

But, true enough, since the thousand sons is in pre-heresy colors he should be wearing Mk2, Mk3 or Mk4.

However, the helmet design is coherent with the rest of the armour. The studded part pointing to a Mk5, the helmet design is right.

the color work is top notch. Kashmir is one of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs and while I do think it fits for this, another one that this also evokes is Blue Oyster Cult's Golden Age of Leather -- especially the line about the wind whipped the desert with a giant hand and the humans and the horrors fight the shifting sands. Amazing stuff from you as usual.

Looks great as usual.

I'd have a slight perspective critique though:
We can see the bottom of the sickle magazine and of the handhold, but not of the flat part below the muzzle... That makes it look like the bolter is "twisted" somehow...

You've done it again: a fascinating illustration.

And for desert themed songs i recommend you to hear Home, of Dream Theater:

Fascinating and ironic, considering I watched 'Dune' for the second time. (this time around the extended version so I understood better what was going on, lol)

I could see the reason behind the Thousand Sons being such potent psykers due to 'Spice' :giggle: Well done Nic ;)
