Description

THE EMPEROR

Fathering - Stability - Authority - Power

Control - Discipline - Command - Common sense

Status quo - Order - Structure - Egocentrism

Tradition - Rigidity - Leadership - Experience

Inflexibility - Conservative ways - Organization

The Emperor sits on his throne. He symbolizes the top of the secular hierarchy, the ultimate male ego. The Emperor is the absolute ruler of the world.

I know many fans will be decidedly thrilled to see this; I know I was when I got the assignment!

A few years ago, I was asked to illustrate the famous Emperor's Tarot, a sacred divination item in the Warhammer 40,000 lore and being the nut that I am for both the traditional Tarot deck and the Dark Millenium, I accepted without a second's hesitation. However, after a few attempts, the fellow requesting it and myself didn't find ourselves on the same page creatively and decided to do other projects and leave this one to rest. But the community had already been stirred and since that day I have been asked over and over if there would ever be a truly complete Emperor's Tarot deck from me.

The answer is yes.

Thanks to another passionate fellow, I was given new instructions and the assignment to not only do the Major Arcana of the Emperor's Tarot, but the Minor Arcana and even the card backs, thus creating a complete and fully rendered deck. Freedom was absolute for me to bring my vision to life and after about a year of toil, here are the results.

As before, I tried to translate the classic archetypes of the Tarot into their Warhammer 40,000 counterparts, to keep consistency and not go chasing the endless versions of the Imperial Tarot that many authors have described.

Some things have changed from my first foray into the deck, mostly having to do with approaching the frame for the cards in a more gothic/medieval way rather than the more sci-fi version I'd previously done. There was also a specific request that The Emperor be rendered in his glory rather than his wretched state, something I agreed because it would be logical for Imperial Artisan to deify Him rather than show his crippled visage. The Harlequin became The Guardsman and so forth...

Thus, here you have the first card, which I present fully framed to give you an idea of how the finished product will look like. The rest of the images I'll upload without the framing, so that the full deck be an exclusive item for the fellow who requested it.

I sincerely hope you enjoy it and expect a full deck to slowly build here in the Gallery.

Nic.-
