DECEPTOR by NicolasRGiacondino DECEPTOR by NicolasRGiacondino
It feels like a while from my last Warhammer 40,000 illustration, but I think that's due to all the other projects I've been developing in-between.

I return to the Dark Millenium, though, with the latest Primarch in the Libris Primaris series: Alpharius Omegon, of the Alpha Legion.

This is one I was really looking forward to depicting. Mostly because I knew there was going to be a lot of symbolism to him, given the secretive and deceitful nature of the Legion.
As I had foreseen, I did incorporate many elements that make this one one of my favourites.
The most obvious is, of course, the presence of Omegon in the background. Or is he Alpharius? No one will know. That's key to the Alpha Legion, their unknown plans and schemes, which i tried to accentuate by making this Traitor Primarch face left as a loyalist, but looking right, as my Taritors. Omegon is promptly doing the inverse, so you never know...
They don't have an established homeworld, so I incorporated the many faces effect on the background, emphasising the Hydra quality of the Legion as well as Alpharius' likeness to that of a regular Marine from his ranks. Something also present in the relatively simple design of his armour, less pompous than his brothers'.
The Hydra is a repetitive motif all around, too...

So, overall, I'm very satisfied and happy with this one and I hope I've once again done justice to the character. You'll be the judges, as usual!

Have a great weekend and see you all soon!

This came out great.  Poor Alpharius the short end of the stick from the other Primarchs imo.  Could've been so useful to loyalists if they'd treated him right...I feel like after that infiltration op he did that the other primarchs busted his balls about, if he'd been talking to Lion or Corax or Khan instead, on the other side of the galaxy, he'd've been treated better...

Thank you so much, my friend!

I know what you mean about Alpharius. But how can we really know he isn't prusuing his own loyalist agenda? The twins were always inscrutable as their legion, so maybe they're still in the service of mankind from another perspective? Definitely food for thought ;)

Nicely done! You put a lot of thought into these. Love the facing as you mentioned, really captures the essence of the Alpha Legion.

Hmm i have to say that i think they are my favorite Legion of them all.

The greatest practical joke the deceptive and sneaky Alpha Legion ever pulled during their loyalist days was performed in a distant theater of war in the Eastern Fringe during the Great Crusade.

The victim of this prank was a humble Imperial FedEx delivery man on a tight schedule.

--- Humorus Historia Imperialis, 4th Edition

[Alpha Legion HQ, XXX.M32]

"Hi, I am looking for Alpharius."

"Emm... haha, funny, now may I ask where's Alpharius?"

"Okay, it wasn't funny the first time, so please, can anyone tell me who is Alpharius so I can -"

"Look, I am just here to deliver this Imp-FedEx parcel! I am not here to spy you or anything! I just need his signature!"

"You know what, forget it, I will just leave the parcel on the table and let you guys hand it to him. I will just write him off and say he's not here to receive it. Go ahead and carry on with that deception crap...yeesh."

[Delivery man walks off. One of the Alpha Legionnaire walks to the table and picks up the parcel. He takes off the helmet]

[At that exact moment, the delivery man jumps back in from the door]

"AHA! Gotcha you sneaky SOB! Think you can fool me? You MUST be Alpharius!"

"Nope... I am Omegon."

my only critique of it would be that, they should have little darker skin tone, as they were describe to have copper color skin tone, other than that great work.

i love the possibity of there being 21 primarchs. or 20 and omegon/alpharius
being one of "lost" you did a really good job on this. it's hard to tell weather
alpha legion has purple and green armor or indigo/blue armor with turquise.
it's either some color between blue or purple and any where from green to
turquise blue (i'm not sure if i'm spelling that right.)
good work

alpha legion maybe my favorite legion, although I only discovered more about them after I stopped playing, I played boring black legion when I played 40K, I was young and foolish and was scared of making armies that specialized in something if I was a space marine player I would have probably gone ultramarine back then :|

Out of all the Traitor Primarchs Alpharius/Omegon is the most interesting to me, I don't know why though. Perhaps it is the aura of mystique about his and his legion...

This is awesome! I love the Alpha Legion. This pic does so much to characterize them so perfectly!

The background is almost reminiscent of communist propaganda which goes nicely with the legion's use of anonymity as well as their more egalitarian nature. [as depicted with their use of human agents and free debate in their command structure]

At the same time it shows off their hydra like nature of striking from more than one front with careful precision. but is also epitomizes their dual nature of being more than one thing at any given time.

I also am fond of the way you depicted Alpharius-Omegon himself. The armor isn't as ostentatious or superficial like that of the other Primarchs [Gulliman and Fulgrim especially]
it could belong to any captain or veteran further re-enforcing the whole equality and anonymity motif.

I also have to admire the subtle way you used the 'loyalist' Primarch's pose to show off the legion's pre-heresy iconography and have the 'traitor' Primarch with the image of his own face on his shoulder. It hints that chaos had bubbled beneath the surface even when he had the fašade of loyalty still present.

It also reminds me how his motives were so difficult to understand. We may never truly know how or why he came to serve chaos. All he'll ever tell is that it was "For the Emperor."
Nightbringer24 Featured By Owner May 15, 2010
Very nice. Also this picture shows the duality of the legion, since Alpharius and Omegon were supposedly two different people. Twins, I believe.
Great work as usual.

I always envisioned these guys in normal power armor to look more like their troops. but that wouldn't be as much fun. Love it anyway.

Also, I was thinking it would be wonderful to see the other characters from Legion. I'm talking about Soneka and Bronzi, John Grammaticus, etc. And Rukhsana, too.;)

My one fantasy is to be, one day, able to direct an animated series in the universe of warhammer 40k. The icing on the cake would be to be able to hire you as a concept artist.

Amzing work, amazing style, I'm jealous.

I love their bodies and the subtle choices of loyalist vs. traitor, but I feel like their heads are missing something. I know they're blending in with the rest of the legion, but... they're even less adorned than regular Space Marines.

Maybe something like a simple tattoo?

I am very happy to see the Alpha Legion Primarchs in all their glory.

First off I like how simple you made the armor look in comparison to the other Primarchs. Yet your still able to fit in plenty of symbols and insignias to make it unmistakably Alpha Legion.

The coloring is also really great. The armor color is the perfect Alpha Legion blueish green, and I like the pale green glowing lights that dot his armor.

Then of course we have the twin brother in the back, peering just over the other. The other dressed in the sleek black and silver armor of the Effrit Stealth Squad.

This picture reminds me of the book Legion, it reminds me why I enjoy the Alpha Legion so very much, and it reminds me that I should put the finishing touches on my Alpha Legion forces sooner rather then later.
Selene-Eclipse Featured By Owner May 8, 2010
This is really beautiful work. The colours are rich, yet very smooth and go well together. I haven't seen too many images of Alpharius, but from what I've seen, this is one of the best. The symbolisms in the picture are neat as well.
May I ask if you used hand-done colouring with it? The shadings and highlights are done really nicely and I wonder how they were done.

And I think you did justice to the character with this. Some works I've seen depict him (or them) as rather crazy, but here you've brought out the subtlety and scheming, mysterious nature of his. You see his expression, and just wonder what he might be thinking. Just what I would expect the Primarch of Alpha Legion to be :)
The-Avatar Featured By Owner May 8, 2010  Hobbyist General Artist
This is, by far, the best one you've done to date, Nick! Alpharius is the most interesting Primarch, in my opinion, because 'Legion' depicted his mind and his tactics so well. What separates him from his brothers is his ability and willingness to think for himself, and not just blindly adhere to Imperial doctrine. It makes you wonder if he really does have a plan to prove the Cabal wrong...
precinctomega Featured By Owner May 8, 2010
Best one yet, Nic. Your use of subtleties of colour and light within the limits of your Copics is even better than usual in this image - and the interactions of the various shades of green are excellently planned.

You know me: I usually try to find something to pick on for improvement, even in artists leagues beyond my meagre talents; but I can't find anything to fault in this one.
master109 Featured By Owner May 7, 2010
they joined chaos so they could destroy it for the emperor its very confusing who's side are they really on
Vlaskiyov Featured By Owner May 7, 2010
Great work as always! You should have a stab at the book "Legion" by Mr. Abnett as it depicts the Alpha Legion and the surprising secret of the twin Primarchs. Also: It's hard to really say which side they are on, they could be loyalist and are just working towards that greater goal to destroy chaos.

Asurael-Returns Featured By Owner May 7, 2010  Hobbyist Digital Artist
It looks awesome, though not very fluffy in the regard that his armour looks considerably cooler than that of a regular marine. Alpharius and Omegon don't jut blend with each other, but with every one of the marines in their legion. It's not very cool from an artistic POV, but their armour should've looked as standard as possible.

Again, though, awesome work ;). You should read the black library's book "Legion".
